By reading my comments on the Main Menu Page
you will see that I think the BoXer has a very good future. So long as
it will be able to compete with future boards
to be on offer from other 3rd party vendors. So why can't the BoXer
be one of the many Next Generation systems? Surely a BoXer board
with a PPC G4/G4 processor (or other for that matter), Voodoo 5 gfx card,
SoundBlaster Live Audio Card, PCI Network and maybe even Adaptec SCSI.
Better yet why not add the Newtek Flyer System. Couple this with a good
monitor. Add a USB keyboard and Mouse etc. You got one very competitive
system.
All this would be very capable of running multiple operating systems.
Say Linux, Amiga OS, AROS, MorphOS and of course the new TAO/Amiga OS.
The BoXer has the makings of a Next Gen. system!
Remember that Amiga Corp have stated they WILL NOT be making
hardware but working with 3rd party companies with Reference designs.
These next Gen. systems will (Sadly), when it comes to the crunch will
be just another PC motherboard, with a high end gfx card; sound card plus
all those extra little goodies we've come to expect. Perhaps even bundled
with an attractive case. Whack on a Boing Ball logo and the infamous "Powered
By Amiga" Sticker - not very Amigaish I know but - times are changing and
if we are to survive - so must we and our ideals.
I'm afraid the days of custom boards, custom chips are over.
We've wanted compatibility and power for so long now. Now the only way
to achieve this is to standardize.
The BoXer in my view will be the last of the Amigas as we know it. Without
getting into the politics of this and the religious side; our Next Gen.
systems will be basic PC's or clones and maybe even the much favoured POP
boards. So why not the BoXer. Apart from a few carry over Amiga features
it's basically become a PC board now. It contains high speed Parallel and
serial, most likely USB.
Ok so it lacks AGP - for the moment.
So what features would be necessary to make it this board a viable,
future, Next Gen. board. One that we could consider realistically?
The idea of this section is to provide a list of features or enhancements that would aid in the direction of the future development of the BoXer. To this end it would allow a longer and more viable life span in the future of Amigas and also provide us with a motherboard that would be competitive with other boards in the near and far future. Your suggestions and comments are required to make this page work! You can either email me with your thoughts, idea and suggestions or simply join the BoXer mailing list. AntiGravity - Are you watching?
Of more recent interest here is a quote from the RMAU Show report of St.Louis. It provides some the details on the insidetrack of what part AntiGravity plays with Amiga and their ties and of more interest where the BoXer will feature. I think the future is bright.
"The Boxer is a unit which uses a proprietary graphics chip of Mick
Tinker's design. This chip is capable of emulating all AGA graphics modes,
as well as producing some enhanced modes of it's own. Consequently, the
Boxer is one solution to the crisis of no longer being able to produce
the AGA chipset. Since the Boxer will be capable of PPC acceleration, it
should be able to run both the Amiga Classic OS and the new Amiga OS.
McEwen also pointed out, however, that the Boxer is just the first
project with Anti Gravity Products that Amiga is interested in. The relationship
with Anti Gravity is a long term relationship. It is anticipated that Anti
Gravity Product will be producing machines capable of running the new Amiga
OS for some time to come. So, Anti Gravity will be at least one manufacturer
that the Amiga enthusiast can turn to for a purely Amiga box. Dan from
Anti Gravity then gave a very short speech describing the status of the
Boxer project, which appears to be entering final test. "
